Summer Anime 2021

written by Aisha Feranmi.

From Tokyo Revengers to Fruits Basket: the Final Season and Nomad: Megalo Box 2, spring 2021 kept us in its reins. Although it was bittersweet with Netflix dropping an audio-picture book and calling it The Way of The Househusband (we need a do-over Netflix!!). Summer looks promising as some long-expected shows are finally getting aired. We’ve put a list of 10 + 3 anime series you should look out for in the coming months. Let us know what you have your eyes on in the comment below.

1. Kakushigoto Movie

This movie is a compilation of the TV series which includes new scenes and different perspectives that were not adapted in the anime.

MC Kakushi Gotou is a popular manga artist known for his inappropriate works. Because of this raunchiness, he swore to keep his profession a secret from his daughter, Hime, believing that she would be disappointed if she finds out. His paranoia-induced belief leads him to hectic situations. He disguises himself as a salaryman every day to protect his secret. Kakushigoto follows the story of a single father and his daughter living in peace as the father goes to extreme lengths to maintain the status quo. Kakushigoto debuts on July 9.

2. Vanitas no Carte/ The Case Study of Vanitas

It seems the Case Study of Vanitas is coming to replace Mars Red as the season’s dark and supernatural fantasy. The main plot revolves around Noé Archiviste, a vampire on a journey to Paris to save his friend and Vanitas, or Dr Vanitas, a human who is a vampire doctor. Vanitas met Noé and informs him he had a cure to make vampires act civil and not devour their prey (humans). Vanitas possesses a book called ‘Book of Vanitas’ that helps him heal the evil in vampires.

The book is really about vampires born on the Blue moon who are hated by vampires born on the Crimson moon, the ones with an instinct to kill. Noé and Vanitas form a group to heal (or kill) all the vampires in the world. To be honest, the trailer of this anime did not give enough information but one thing it gave is that it’s from the writer of Pandora hearts which literally captivated the hearts of those who watched it.

The animation style is also fantastic, if you’re a fan of B: the beginning’s animation style, you should definitely lookout for this, and for those of you who are into the sexy blood-sucking vampire with dark hair and white highlights trope, you know what to do. Add this to your TBW list ahead of July 2 when it debuts.

3. The Deer King

A band of death warriors (the Lone Antlers) give their lives to save their homeland from the wrath of the Zol Empire. Their leader and sole survivor, Van is enslaved in a salt mine. One night, a pack of savage dogs attack the mine, and soon after a mysterious disease wipes out the slaves and their keepers. Van escapes with a little girl called Yuna and raises her as his own. Meanwhile, Hohsalle, a gifted physician, searches for a cure for the disease spreading among the Zolian settlers. The story follows these men and the lengths they will go to save the ones they love and the people of the land. This anime airs on September 10.

4. Night Head 2041

The Korihara brothers, from a young age, were incarcerated in a secure scientific facility because of their psychic abilities. After the barrier keeping them in the facility’s malfunctions, the brothers escape. The story also focuses on another group of brothers, the Kuroki brothers who are trying to catch the Korihara brothers and probably hold them captive again (the trailer doesn’t let much on). In a world where ability users are scrutinized, the Korihara brothers must make sure to not cross paths with the Kuroki brothers, a game of cat and mouse. Night Head debuts on Jul 15.

5. Scarlet Nexus

Solar calendar year 2020: grotesque organisms called Others have begun eating people. To take down this new enemy, the Other Suppression Force is formed. Saved by this elite team as a child, psychokinetic Yuito withstands the training to enlist. On the other hand, prodigy Kasane was scouted for her abilities. But Kasane’s dreams tell her strange things, dragging the two into an unavoidable fate. This RPG adaptation debuts on July 18.

6. That Time I Reincarnated as a Slime Season 2 Part 2

Tensei Shitara Slime Data Ken or That Tie I Reincarnated as a slime returns with the second half of the second season. The first half ended–without giving spoilers- with Rimuru Tempest becoming a Demon Lord. What do this OP character and his minions have in store for us? We are yet to see Rimuru Tempest fight a Demon Lord one on one so I hope this is something the creators have considered and are finally giving us. This airs on July 6.

7.Re- Main

A sports anime from MAPPA studio? Yes, please. Monato was once a water polo prodigy in Middle school till a traumatic accident forced him to give up the sport, leaving a hole in his life. Thanks to his friends, he tries water polo again in high school and joins the school’s team with said friends. What is a sports anime without setbacks? Most on the water polo team suck at the sport, this impedes them from becoming the winning team. The characters get handsome designs thanks to Aori Fuyika. Re-main, from the trailer, looks like an emotional and perhaps, tear-jerking show. Re-main debuts on July 4.

8. Sonny Boy

Is this utopia or hell? It was supposed to be a regular summer vacation, you know? Empty classrooms, boring days spent on the beach with manga till suddenly, the school drifts to a different dimension. 36 boys and girls are left there with new supernatural abilities. A story of survival of students sinking into another dimension from director Shingo Natsume (One Punch Man) and studio MadHouse airs July 19.

9. The Detective is Already Dead

Kimihito has been a magnet for trouble for as long as he can remember. From stumbling across murder scenes or receiving mysterious attaché cases to transport- this how he met the attractive detective, Siesta- aboard a plane where an emergency breaks out. Siesta appoints him as her assistant and he embarks on an adventure of crime-solving with her. Now he has returned to life as he used to know it, which is bland in comparison. Since the detective is already dead, there’s no hope of an adventure for him again. Airs on July 4.

10. How a Realist Hero Rebuilt the Kingdom

Yup! You guessed it right from the ridiculously lengthy title. This is an Isekai anime. Like every other Isekai, the MC (Kazuya) is unexpectedly transported to another world where the people expect a hero but Souma’s idea of heroism is rebuilding the flagging economy. Married to the princes of the kingdom, Souma searches for wise counterparts that can help him rebuild the kingdom, not through war but through administrative reform as he ascends the throne. This anime airs on July 4.
